Sport Creates Opportunity
Where Sport Becomes a Pathway to Education, Leadership and Hope
Across Kenya and East Africa, thousands of young people possess talent, discipline, and ambition, but lack access, opportunity, and structured pathways to reach their potential. At DBA Africa, we believe sports development is not about winning trophies alone. It is about changing lives, strengthening communities, and creating long-term opportunity through sport. DBA uses sport as a tool for social impact, youth development, and ethical talent progression. Through rugby, lacrosse, and athletics, we design programmes that go beyond the field, building confident athletes, resilient young people, and future leaders.
Sports Development as a Pathway to Opportunity
Effective sports development creates structure, mentorship, exposure, and belief. Without it, talented athletes are often overlooked due to geography, finances, or lack of access. DBA Africa exists to bridge this gap, connecting grassroots sport to elite opportunity, while ensuring every young person develops the life skills needed to succeed beyond sport.
Our development model focuses on:
- Early engagement through grassroots academies
- Consistent competition via tournaments, festivals, and fixtures
- Education and welfare support alongside athletic growth
- Ethical pathways to scholarships, employment, and leadership
This approach ensures no talent is lost simply because opportunity was missing.
Holistic Sports Development: Creating Pathways, Protecting Potential, and Powering Futures
DBA Africa’s sports development model is built around developing the whole athlete, using rugby, lacrosse, and athletics as powerful pathways to education, leadership, and long-term opportunity. Rugby sits at the heart of this work through DBA Rugby Academies, satellite centres, and the DBA Futures Cup, East Africa’s premier U15 boys’ and girls’ rugby tournament established in 2023 which has reshaped youth talent identification beyond school rugby, engaging over 500 players, 4,000 spectators, 3,000 trialists, and directly supporting 143+ scholarship placements across the region.
Today, DBA operates nine academies across five regions, supporting more than 220 academy rugby players, including over 150 girls competing in the Futures Cup, while delivering safeguarding, life skills education, coach development, and inclusive girls’ rugby pathways such as the DBA x Kabras RFC partnership. Beyond rugby, DBA Africa is expanding access to global opportunity through the DBA Lacrosse Academy in Kampala, led by Uganda National Team players, where more than 200 athletes, including 80+ girls, have been introduced to a fast-growing international sport, resulting in U.S. scholarship pathways and sustained local employment for 5–6 coaches annually. In athletics, the DBA Athletics Race Fund removes financial barriers by covering race entry fees, transport, and accommodation, enabling 98 athletes to compete in 13 national and international races, supporting para-athletes, and generating KES 265,000 in athlete winnings.
Underpinning all programmes is a commitment to holistic development through the Big 5 and Little 5 Athlete Programmes, covering financial literacy, nutrition, sports psychology, leadership, media training, and career transition, alongside the Tackle-It Violence Prevention Programme, which uses sport to promote safeguarding, peer advocacy, and positive behaviour change, ensuring athletes are prepared not just to compete, but to thrive on and off the field.
Our Vision for the Future of Sports Development in Africa
DBA Africa’s vision is clear:
A future where every young person, regardless of gender, background, or location, can access sport as a pathway to education, employment, and leadership.
Our plans include:
- Expanding academies into new regions
- Growing girls’ participation across all sports
- Increasing international and local scholarship placements
- Strengthening school and university partnerships globally
- Investing in local coaches and community leadership
Dream. Believe. Achieve.
