Running for Kevin: The Kevin McCool Fund Helps Athletes Chase Their Dreams
In Kenya, running is more than a sport , it’s a lifeline. For many young athletes, especially in places like Iten, Kapsabet, and Eldoret, running is a path out of poverty. These aspiring champions train on dirt roads with worn-out shoes, fuelled by determination and the hope of changing their future. Race entry fees, transport, and basic gear are often out of reach. Yet, every morning, they lace up, some with torn trainers, chasing not just a finish line, but the dream of a better life.
That’s where the Kevin McCool Fund (KMMF) steps in.
The Kevin McCool Fund was created in honour of Kevin McCool, a passionate supporter of youth in athletics. After his sudden passing, his family and friends came together to keep his legacy alive. The goal of the fund is simple: support young runners by covering race entry fees and transport to events.
Since launching in April 2025, the Kevin McCool Fund has helped dozens of up-and-coming athletes participate in races across Kenya. These athletes come from humble backgrounds, but they all share a strong desire to run and compete.
Race 1: Eldoret City Marathon – 27 April 2025
The first event under the Kevin McCool Fund was a big moment. Ten athletes (3 women and 7 men) entered the Eldoret City Marathon. Known as one of the toughest races in the country, the competition was fierce, with over 600 athletes registered. Despite the challenge, three of the ten registered thanks to Kevin McCool, finished in the top 40, an impressive achievement in such a talent-packed field.
Some athletes were forced to drop out due to injuries or poor-quality shoes, an ongoing issue that DBA Africa hopes to solve through future partnerships with running shoe brands. Even so, the day marked a powerful beginning for the Fund and the athletes it supports.
Race 2: Betika Iten 15km – 11 May 2025
The second race supported by the Kevin McCool Fund was different, but equally powerful. The Betika Iten 15km was a free event, so funds were used to support athlete travel and preparation. Fourteen athletes (4 women and 10 men) took part Thanks to the Fund. For many, it was their first official race.
Just getting to the start line was a victory. Several athletes wrote to us afterwards, saying how deeply it mattered to be part of something. The race highlighted how even small, local events can inspire growth, confidence, and belief, especially when cost is no longer a barrier.
Looking Ahead
The Kevin McCool Fund continues to support runners throughout the 2025 season. Upcoming races include:
- Nairobi Expressway Marathon – July
- Betika Uasin Gishu Half Marathon – August
- Standard Chartered Marathon – October
- Iten International Marathon – November
- Moi Bien – December
Each race is a chance for a young runner to shine, gain experience, and build the foundation for a future in the sport.
Kevin McCool believed in people. He believed in helping others chase their dreams. Through the Kevin McCool Fund, his legacy runs on, one step, one race, one athlete at a time
