International Human Rights Day: Building a Brighter Future Through Sport with DBA Africa
Today, as the world recognizes International Human Rights Day, DBA Africa pauses to celebrate the profound connection between human rights and the transformative power of sport. Our journey is one of tireless dedication, not just to athletic achievement, but to building a brighter future where dignity, opportunity, and inclusion are accessible to all, powered by the spirit of the game.
DBA Africa has always prided itself on the hard work put into creating genuine pathways through sport. From our early days in athlete management to our current focus on comprehensive development programs, our growth has been incredibly linked to the diverse community of coaches, athletes, parents, and staff members who have believed in our vision. Without their commitment, we simply would not be this far.
Opportunities: Upholding the Right to Education and Development
A core component of our mission is ensuring that talent translates into tangible life opportunities. We have been true to standing with athletes from start to finish, particularly through securing invaluable scholarship opportunities, both locally and internationally. The success stories of athletes like Rayvon Forest Amunga, who acquired a full international scholarship, and Darlton, who received a partial scholarship through our rugby programs, fill us with immense pride. They are not just excelling in sport, they are flying the DBA Africa flag high, embodying the right to education and personal development.
Inclusion: Championing Girls' Rights in Sport
DBA Africa is fiercely committed to girls' inclusion in sport. Recognizing the numerous underlying issues that often act as barriers, we have been privileged to tailor-make programs designed specifically to give girls full access and inclusion in sporting activities. Our core principle is simple: every girl has the right to play, compete, and thrive.
A major standout in this movement is Sharon Atieno from our Nakuru-based academy. Sharon's dedication has seen her training hard, participating in festivals, and shining brightly in this year's Futures Cup, an event specifically for girls. Her key role in the subsequent Dream Team tour, where she emerged as the MVP, is a testament to what is possible when the right opportunities are created. We are fully proud of her efforts and determination.
Integrity and Leadership: Fostering Rights Beyond the Pitch
Our programs are designed to impart more than just athletic prowess, we focus on crucial life skills, building integrity, and developing local leadership. We believe the potential of our athletes stretches far off the pitch. We have been privileged to see many athletes come out of their shells and show the world what they can do.
Reagan Ochan, a Ugandan-born lacrosse player and an inspiration to many, is a perfect example. After going through our program, he secured a scholarship, and is now partly working while simultaneously supporting children and girls trying to get into sport in Uganda through his RO16foundation at the DBA Africa Lacrosse academy. His work embodies the spirit of community development and the right to self-determination.
As we mark International Human Rights Day, we celebrate the dignified opportunities we have created and the challenging but rewarding experiences we have undergone in our push towards access to sport for all. DBA Africa will continue our solid work on these fronts, supporting where we can to get more people actively involved, ensuring that the human right to play, develop, and succeed is realised for every single athlete.
