A New Purpose Leon Nyang’s Mental Health Journey

"They say don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened." It's a cliché that often rings hollow when a dream, built on sacrifice and dedication, comes to a sudden halt. For Leon Nyang, a coach at our DBA Africa Nairobi Rugby Academy, this sentiment became a painful reality. His journey is a powerful reminder that behind every athlete's triumph, there can be a silent battle with mental health.

We are incredibly proud to highlight Leon's story, especially as we approach Mental Health Awareness Day. After dedicating his life to rugby and facing numerous setbacks, including multiple head collisions, Leon had to make the difficult decision to step away from the game he loved. It's a heart-wrenching loss to let go of a dream you’ve poured everything into, where every step and every choice was made to reach a single goal, donning the Kenyan national colors.

However, Leon's story isn't one of an ending; it’s one of a powerful evolution. While he may no longer be chasing his own dream on the pitch, he has found a new, perhaps even more meaningful, purpose.

As a DBA Africa coach, we see the love and passion he carries for the sport every single day. He is now shaping and inspiring the next generation of players, a role that will have a lasting impact for years to come. We hope to see DBA players represent the national team in the future, a testament to his guidance and resilience. “Watching him at the Nairobi Wazi Wazi academy has been a delight. He takes the time to have one on ones with whichever kid approaches him. Once he spent a whole session counseling a very shy child who was nervous to join the group, soon after the same child was enthusiastic, jovial and participating in the session.” Academy Head, Philip Wamae mentioned.

Beyond the field, Leon's knowledge and advocacy for mental health are something Kenya urgently needs. His mission to support athletes mentally and emotionally is vital. His personal experience has given him a unique perspective on the unseen struggles in sport. Now, his purpose is to give other Kenyan athletes the care, tools, and strength they’ve long deserved.

Leon, you didn’t lose your dream, you evolved it. Your journey is an inspiration to all of us and a powerful symbol of turning personal struggle into a purpose that will benefit countless others. We are honored to be a part of your journey and to support your mission.
