DBA Africa Dream Team Duo Shine as Coastal Tsunamis Sweep Driftwood 7s
The Coastal Tsunamis, powered by DBA Africa, delivered a commanding performance at the 2025 Driftwood 7s Age Grade Rugby Tournament held at the Mombasa Sports Club on Friday, July 25.
The team clinched both the U15 and U18 boys' titles, with two standout players from the DBA Africa's Future’s Cup Dream Team, Abdalla Mwinyi and Shabani Jilani Tunje (Shaban Shaban), featuring in the U18 Tsunamis side. Their presence shows the efficacy of DBA’s development pipeline, which continues to grow talent from community academies to national-level age-grade rugby.
Shaban Shaban, who was named U18 MVP at Driftwood 7s, built on his previous experience with the Dream Team during their Uganda tour, alongside him, Abdalla Mwinyi helped anchor a formidable Coastal Tsunamis backline. Their contributions played a key role in the team’s unbeaten run and eventual tournament victory. In the U15 category, the Tsunamis led by Juma Katambo, who was named u15 MVP, impressed with fast-paced attacking rugby and disciplined defence.
According to coach and development manager Mwinyihaji Mohamed, who has also been appointed Regional U18 Boys Head Coach for the Coast, “The performance at Driftwood shows what is possible when young players receive consistent support, structure and opportunity. DBA Africa’s involvement has raised the ceiling for what Coast rugby can achieve.”
The Coastal Tsunamis' double win also reinforces DBA Africa’s strategic goal of taking players from grassroots to greatness. With six U18s from the team selected for upcoming Kenya U18 national trials in September, the transition from regional tournaments to elite platforms is already underway.
This success story highlights DBA Africa’s impact in shaping the next generation of rugby athletes. Through initiatives like the DBA Dream Team and long-term investment in regional academies, DBA Africa is unlocking potential and creating new opportunities for boys like Mwinyi and Shaban to thrive on and off the field.
With more players emerging through DBA’s grassroots network, moments like Driftwood 7s affirm that the journey from community fields to national stages is not only possible, it's already in motion. We are looking forward to seeing more of our academy teams playing in addition age grade tournaments on the national 7s circuit.
