Eliminating Barriers The Athletics Race Fund Delivers Immediate, Life-Changing Impact
The launch of the Athletics Race Fund (ARF) has delivered some really essential impact, validating its role as a critical starter for talented runners in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kenya. Founded in 2025 by our founder, Storm Trentham, ARF was designed with one clear, strategic objective, to eliminate the complex logistical and financial barriers that tend to deter athletes from competing at regional, national and international levels. By doing so, the ARF ensures these runners can channel their focus fully to their performance and the finish line.
The reality on the ground in Iten is one of dedication meeting frustration, a place DBA Africa frequently visits. Many exceptional athletes spend countless hours perfecting their form and performance on the track, yet they are unable to translate that effort into competitive experience. Financial limitations frequently restrict willing competitors, limiting their exposure and ability to progress. Athletics Race Fund steps into this critical gap by handling all complex logistics, including travel from their home villages to the race meet, quality accommodation, and covering essential race entry fees, turning isolated practice into meaningful competition.
Crucially, ARF’s role extends further than race logistics. Through interactions with local running communities, we recognize and actively address the deeper challenges hindering participation and athlete development. We have found ourselves in a situation where we are entering athletes and they do not show up or some report back injuries or unwell, this is days prior to the actual event. These are issues we are looking to resolve and potentially mitigate in the future.
This powerful start was fueled by community generosity and commitment. Since the fund's establishment, donations have poured in from well-wishers, the DBA Donor Box, and a dedicated network of supporters. We must extend immense gratitude to Boris Motte, who has proven to be an absolute asset. Boris drove significant fundraising momentum by undertaking grueling track and bike challenges, galvanizing his network of friends and family to make the ARF vision a reality today.
For many athletes, this ARF-funded trip to the city center was far more than a race, it was a dream, a life-changing experience. For some promising runners, it marked their very first time traveling outside of Elgeyo Marakwet County, providing cultural exposure and essential life experience alongside the heat of competition. Many had never experienced the care and diligence shown throughout the trip.
The results of this inaugural trip really validated the mission. While every participant gained invaluable exposure, two performances quite stood out, James Kangogo ran an impressive race finishing 9th in the half marathon with a time of 1:04:24. Equally remarkable, Godfrey Kipruto Busienei demonstrated his endurance, clocking in at 2:17:39 to finish off at 18th place in the full marathon. You can read on the Standard Chartered Marathon.
We also offer our deepest thanks to the Healthy U marketing team for their incredible partnership. Their support entered 11 athletes into the race and supplied generous supplements, ensuring our runners were optimally fueled for their efforts. In addition they provided us with tent space where we could present and discuss the Athletics Race Fund.
The momentum continues as the ARF group sets its sights on the Iten International Marathon slated for the 25th of November. We invite you to stay engaged and partner with us as we continue to break barriers and help these remarkable athletes chase their global dreams.
