From the Pitch to the Classroom

My Journey with DBA Africa

By Frederick Okoth Ouma

When I first joined the academy back in 2022, I’ll be the first to admit I was a different person. I was often described as erratic and, at times, a bit troublesome. I struggled to find my footing until I realized that sport wasn't just a game to me, it was my compass. Today, as a student-athlete at Laiser Hill Academy, I look back on how this journey has reshaped my entire world.

Sport as a Guiding Principle

For me, sport is the filter through which I see my life. Before I make any decision, I find myself asking one simple question: "Will this have a positive or negative impact on my performance?" This mindset has kept me grounded. In a world where it is easy to get lost in the wrong crowds or fall into irresponsible habits, the discipline of training keeps me focused. I appreciate the lack of "dead time" in my schedule, being busy with sport and studies is what keeps me on the right path.

The Laiser Hill Experience

Attending a prestigious institution like Laiser Hill is a dream that felt out of reach for someone from my background. It is an environment that demands excellence. On the field, I’ve been proud to push my team to the provincial and national levels. However, the transition hasn’t been without its hurdles. Coming from a marginalized background, I face significant academic challenges. It isn't for a lack of effort, I am working tirelessly to bridge the gap and attain the grades required to match my athletic ambitions.

A Network of Support

My success is not mine alone, it is the result of a structured support system that believed in me when I was still finding my way. I am eternally grateful to:

  • DBA Africa: For the mentorship and for seeing the potential behind my initial struggles.
  • Richard Jones (Head of Bryanston): For his instrumental role in opening doors to world-class standards.
  • The "Friends of Freddie": A group of supporters whose endless encouragement has provided me with the security to focus on a better future.

The Balance of the Student-Athlete

Balancing high-level competition with a rigorous academic curriculum is incredibly demanding, but it is a challenge I embrace. The partnership between DBA Africa and my school ensures that I am not just a player on a pitch, but a student with a viable career path.

I hope my story serves as a testament to the young athletes currently coming through the ranks at the academy. If you allow sport to check your character and you embrace the support offered to you, there is no limit to where this journey can take you.
