Girls Dream Team Tour

Where Dreams, Development, and Rugby Met the Ocean Breeze

This Flashback Friday, we’re turning back to an unforgettable chapter in girls’ rugby development in Kenya, the 2024 Girls Dream Team Tour to the Coast. More than just matches and beaches, this tour was a moment of growth, belief, and sheer possibility for a group of young athletes who dared to dream beyond familiar fields.

A Tour Roots in Opportunity and Development

DBA Africa has been hosting this event for the past 4 years. The team was selected from the 2024 Girls Futures Cup, where regional teams competed fiercely as part of DBA Africa’s youth sports development initiatives, the Girls Dream Team was more than a squad, it was a representation of girls’ inclusion in sport, athletic potential across the country.

The tour brought together young players from different regions, including Western, Rift Valley, Nairobi, and the Coast, giving them a rare opportunity to train, compete, bond, and experience new environments together. It was about more than just rugby skills, it was about building confidence, leadership, resilience, and lifelong memories. We consider this a new frontier in rugby development in Kenya.

Competition That Shapes Futures

On tour, these young athletes didn’t just enjoy coastal air, they played competitive games, tested their abilities, and gained insight into how structured sport feels on the road. Matches were played in spirited round-robin formats that challenged them physically and mentally, mirroring the intensity of structured competition beyond local leagues.

Competing against regional teams introduced them to new styles of play, deepened their tactical understanding, and reinforced the importance of game awareness and quick decision-making, essential components of growth in all aspects of rugby. Through these experiences, players gained a deeper sense of what it takes to compete consistently, stay focused, and perform under pressure. The athletes gain life skills that they would otherwise miss in a formal classroom setting.

Bonding Beyond the Pitch

The Girls Dream Team Tour wasn’t just about training and results, it was about bonding. It was about the laughter on the SGR, the lessons learned under the sun, the shared meals, and the collective pride in wearing one jersey. Those shared moments away from home helped players build deeper connections with teammates they once only knew as competitors.

Touring together gave these girls a sense of identity and belonging, experiences that extend far beyond rugby and into life skills such as teamwork, communication, and adaptability.

Empowerment Through Sport and Representation

This tour stands as a testament to the power of girls’ rugby in Kenya, showing that when girls are intentionally included, supported, and given platforms to compete, they don’t just participate, they excel. The tour elevated young female athletes, proving that girls deserve the same pathways and exposure historically reserved for boys.

It also reinforced the broader mission of DBA Africa: that sports development in Africa must be inclusive, equitable, and empowering. Through programmes like the Futures Cup and tours like this, girls learn that their dreams are valid, and achievable.

Pathways Opened and Futures Ahead

For many of these players, the Girls Dream Team Tour served as a stepping stone — one that could lead to:

  • Scholarships and academy placements
  • National age-grade selection pathways
  • Increased visibility with coaches and scouts
  • Leadership opportunities within clubs and communities

By creating this platform, DBA Africa continues to solidify girls’ inclusion in sport, ensuring that youth development in Kenya remains vibrant, impactful, and forward-looking.

Turning Memories into Momentum

The Girls Dream Team Tour to the coast wasn’t simply a trip, it was a transformation. It showed us that when opportunity meets preparation, futures shift. When girls are believed in and invested in through structured programmes, sport becomes more than a game, it becomes a force for confidence, belonging, growth, and leadership.

This tour is part of a larger story at DBA Africa, a story of young people finding their strength, forging their paths, and inspiring communities through sport.
