Kevin McCool Memorial Fund Fuels Young Runners at Nairobi Expressway Marathon

The Nairobi Expressway Marathon brought together a highly talented field of runners from across Kenya and beyond, a country and region known for producing champions in long-distance running. Among these competitors were 32 passionate athletes supported by the Kevin McCool Memorial Fund (KMMF), proudly organised and enabled by DBA Africa.

This year’s event was about more than medals and finish lines. Thanks to the Kevin McCool Memorial Fund and DBA Africa, it became a story of opportunity, inclusion, and hope. The fund covered transport, food, accommodation, and race entry for each of the 32 athletes, making it possible for young runners who live on a similar amount per month to compete on a big stage.

Without this support, these aspiring athletes simply wouldn’t have had the chance to test their abilities alongside Kenya’s elite and international competitors.

Why the Kevin McCool Memorial Fund Matters

The Kevin McCool Memorial Fund was created in honour of Kevin McCool, a passionate believer in people, potential, and the power of sport. The fund supports promising young athletes from under-resourced backgrounds, giving them access to races, training, and visibility. For many, this is the difference between staying home or being seen by scouts, sponsors, and future running opportunities.

At DBA Africa, our mission is to use sport for development and excellence. We believe sport can transform lives, not only by building champions but by growing character, confidence, and community. Through partnerships like the KMMF, we’re reaching more youth and helping them dream bigger and achieve more.

Race Day Highlights – Kevin Would Be Proud

The Nairobi Expressway Marathon was exceptionally well organised, from registration to race support. Our athletes gave it everything.

42 KM Full Marathon

Benard Chepkwony finished 21st with a time of 2:12:19, missing the top 20 prize money by just one second, a heartbreaking yet powerful reminder of how narrow the margins are at the top.

Beatrice Murgor finished 49th in the women’s race with a strong 2:47:35, showing grit and consistency over the tough course.

21 KM Half Marathon

Silvester Kipkemboi ran 1:04:03, earning 43rd place in a competitive field, demonstrating courage and determination.

10 KM Race

Victor Okoth achieved a personal best of 28:16, finishing 21st, a huge milestone in his running career.

Not every runner finished, injuries and exhaustion took their toll, but every single athlete displayed resilience, heart, and the spirit Kevin McCool championed. That’s what sport is about. That’s why this fund exists.

The Road Ahead

This is just the beginning. The Kevin McCool Memorial Fund continues to support runners year-round, aiming to help more young athletes gain access to training, competition, and growth opportunities. With the right support, they can transform their dreams into reality, and one day, stand on podiums of their own.
