Grassroots to Greatness

The Honey Badgers Cricket Charity Event in Support of DBA Africa

On the 28th of March, the historic Simba Union grounds were transformed into a vibrant hub of community spirit and sporting excellence. Under a clear blue sky, players, families, and supporters gathered for the Honey Badgers Cricket Charity Event, a full day of "fun in the sun" dedicated to a singular impactful cause, supporting the ongoing mission of DBA Africa.

This wasn't just a cricket fixture, it was a celebration of the power of sport to unite people across generations. With over 40 players taking to the crease and dozens of family members cheering from the side lines, the atmosphere was superb. While the cricket took center stage, the day was designed to be a family affair, featuring engaging activities for children and ensuring that supporters of all ages could contribute to the day’s success.

The fixture was organized by one of DBA Africa’s long-standing partners, Freddie Mills. Known for his work facilitating overseas educational placements for Kenyan students in the UK, Freddie has remained a steadfast advocate for the development of young talent in the region. His commitment to DBA Africa stems from a shared history. In previous years, Freddie hosted UK school tours in Kenya, where DBA Africa played a pivotal role in connecting parents with international educational opportunities while highlighting the "thankless yet essential" work performed by public benefit organisations.

Storm Trentham, director at DBA Africa, was in attendance to witness the community’s generosity firsthand. “The fixture was an amazing event filled with wonderful people who are truly passionate about sport and seeing it flourish,” she remarked. “We are incredibly grateful to Freddie and the team for his vision and for choosing to support our projects. It is partnerships like these that allow us to keep pushing boundaries.”

As the sun began to set over Simba Union, the action transitioned from the pitch to a celebratory evening program. The group congregated for a series of speeches and a high-energy charity auction. The collective efforts of the Honey Badgers and their supporters culminated in a remarkable achievement, 100,000 KES raised in a single day.

These funds are earmarked for the direct improvement and scaling of DBA Africa’s core programs. Currently, DBA Africa is operating several life-changing initiatives focused on:

  • Empowering Young Athletes: Providing the resources and coaching necessary for talent to thrive.
  • Promoting Integrity and Local Leadership: Mentoring the next generation of Kenyan leaders through the discipline of sport.
  • Girls’ Inclusion: Breaking down barriers to ensure young women have equal access to athletic and educational pathways.
  • Grassroots to Greatness: Building sustainable pipelines that take athletes from local fields to international stages.

At DBA Africa, we believe that every child deserves a pathway to success. The kindness and sportsmanship displayed by the Honey Badgers and Freddie Mills provide the vital fuel needed to turn that belief into a reality. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who participated, donated, and cheered. Together, we are not just playing a game, we are building a legacy.
