Breaking Barriers: DBA Africa Celebrates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Today, as the world recognizes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, DBA Africa stands proudly with every individual who uses sport to defy limitations. We believe that ability knows no boundaries, and talent should never be sidelined by disability or lack of resources.

To illustrate this powerful message, we want to shine our spotlight on an athlete whose remarkable performance embodies resilience and raw potential, Martin Ndungu, a deaf athlete who reached out to DBA Africa in support of a race Nairobi bound.

A Champion Discovered: Martin Ndungu

Martin, a gifted deaf athlete, recently connected with DBA Africa thanks to the keen eye of Amos Kimutai, our reliable contact based in Iten. Amos didn't hesitate to reach out to us, emphasizing the immense talent and competitive potential Martin possessed.

When our Director, Storm Trentham, learned of Martin's situation, a highly promising athlete with no means to compete, she quickly jumped on the opportunity to help. Martin’s need came at a pivotal moment, just as the final concept for our Athletics Race Fund (ARF) was being finalized. The ARF is specifically designed to cover essential costs like race entry, accommodation, and transport for athletes who have the will to compete but lack the financial resources.

Martin Ndungu became the program's very first beneficiary.

The Road to Kasarani

Martin’s immediate goal was to compete in the highly crucial World Athletics Deaf Championship qualifiers in Nairobi. All he needed was the logistical support to get there.

Through our programs coordinator, the necessary arrangements were swiftly made, allowing Martin to travel to Nairobi for the trials held between the 11th and 12th of October at the prestigious Kasarani Stadium. This was his chance to prove his months of hard training were worth it.

To our absolute delight and immense pride, Martin Ndungu emerged victorious.

His success earned him a coveted slot in the national training group, where he trained rigorously in Nairobi throughout the month of November. This podium finish is a testament to the sheer hard work and incredible resilience he possesses as a deaf athlete.

Belief Beyond Boundaries

Martin Ndungu’s story beautifully captures the essence of what DBA Africa believes: that every athlete, both able-bodied and disabled, has the ability to achieve glory when given the opportunity. Through him we could see one of our key pillars being brought out, local leadership.

We are incredibly proud of Martin's dedication and the amazing work he put in to secure his victory. His success reinforces the unwavering belief we have in supporting athletes who embody grit and determination.

On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we urge more people with disabilities to not let their disability cause inability. The sporting world is filled with opportunities to express talent and achieve greatness on a global stage.

DBA Africa is here to stand with you. Whether through the Athletics Race Fund or simply by providing support and logistics, we are committed to helping athletes with passion cross that starting line. We encourage every individual with a disability who harbors sporting dreams to seek out organizations and programs that can provide the necessary platform.

Your ability is your strength. Let's achieve greatness together.
