The Power of Girls in Sport

Why Girls Thrive in Competition and Why It Matters for Africa’s Future

At DBA Africa, we’ve witnessed it time and again, when girls are given the opportunity to compete, whether on the rugby pitch, the athletics track, or in community sports festivals, they don’t just play the game, they transform themselves and their communities.

Girls thrive in competition because sport unlocks something deeper than winning medals. It cultivates confidence, resilience, leadership, teamwork, and purpose, life skills that expand far beyond the field of play. Competitive environments challenge girls to push limits, break barriers, set goals, and lead with courage in contexts where they’ve historically been left behind.

But why is this critical, not just for individual girls, but for Africa’s youth, its communities, and its economy?

Levelling the Playing Field: Girls in Sport as a Catalyst for Change

In many parts of East Africa, girls still face social and structural barriers that limit access to sport, from lack of safe spaces and mentorship to societal norms that prioritise boys’ participation. At DBA Africa, our “Sport for All". Futures for Everyone” ethos ensures girls are not sidelined, they’re central to our mission.

By embedding girls’ inclusion into every programme from rugby academies in Western Kenya to inclusive athletics training, we’re redefining what opportunities look like for young women. Our community academies actively recruit girls into structured sport, backed by trained coaches, life-skills sessions, access to competitions, and evidence-based sports development that promotes gender equity and personal agency.

Sport as a Strategic Platform for Youth Development

1. Youth Development and Sports Opportunities

Girls who compete develop self-belief, a foundation for pursuing education, careers, and leadership roles. Competitions like the DBA Futures Cup now feature dedicated girls divisions, empowering female athletes to display skill, grit, and ambition on the same stage as their male counterparts. This isn’t just sport, it’s a holistic youth development framework that equips girls with assets for life.

2. Grassroots Sports Development Africa and Kenya

From the DBA Rift Valley Rugby Academies to our DBA x Kabras RFC Girls Rugby Academy in Western Kenya, DBA’s grassroots development programmes ensure girls have safe, accessible, and high-quality coaching. Today, girls make up 40% of participants, a number that continues to rise as barriers fall and support systems grow.

3. Sports Academy Kenya and Rugby Academy Kenya

Our network of academies, including the Rugby Academy in Nairobi and Rift Valley centres, blends rugby, athletics, and life skills in a supportive environment. These environments allow girls to compete, learn leadership, and develop sport-based life skills training crucial for social mobility.

4. Scholarships and Sports Development Kenya

Competition opens doors, literally. Performances on the pitch and track have led to sports scholarships locally and abroad. Girls from Western Wanderers and other Futures Cup teams have gained placements in schools that blend academic excellence with sporting opportunity, a testament to the life-changing potential of sport.

Investing in Girls Means Investing in Africa’s Future

When girls thrive in sport, the ripple effects are profound: Education outcomes improve, youth empowerment increases, community health and cohesion strengthens and economic opportunities expand. Sports becomes a tool for social change, equipping girls to succeed in school, in work, and in community leadership. This aligns directly with Sustainable Youth Development Programmes and CSR goals that organisations across East Africa are prioritising today.

What DBA Africa Is Doing Next

At DBA Africa, the next phase of growth is bold and intentional. We are driving Women’s Sports Development Africa through tailored programmes that create clear pathways for Girls in Sport  from grassroots participation to elite competition in Rugby and Athletics. At the same time, we are expanding Youth Sports Programs Africa, integrating rugby, athletics, lacrosse, and multi-sport festivals with dedicated girls’ divisions to ensure inclusive and equitable access.

Our commitment to NGO Partnerships for Youth Development continues to deepen through collaborative coach training, equipment provision, and structured Sport-based Life Skills Training under a holistic youth development framework.

In parallel, we are scaling Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Sports Projects that provide measurable Social Impact Through Sport Kenya, helping to level the playing field through sport while delivering sustainable, community-driven outcomes across East Africa.
