Empowering Girls Through Soccer Coaching at KGSA

Alysha Clements Leads Masterclass at Kibera Girls Soccer Academy

DBA Africa was delighted to welcome former footballer and experienced coach Alysha Clements to Kenya this month, on her very first visit to Africa. Alysha came with one clear aim: to share her love and knowledge of the game.

During her week in Nairobi with DBA Africa, Alysha visited the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) to deliver a football masterclass. The girls threw themselves into every drill, and the energy on the pitch was clear to everyone involved. For Alysha, one thing stood out above all else: the girls’ hunger to learn. She noted a real contrast with the young players she coaches day to day, and said that drive was what made the session so memorable.

Alysha brings a wealth of experience to the pitch transferable to youth development. Over a playing career spanning more than 30 years, she played in England, Canada, the USA and Dubai, including spells with Fulham Women, and won honours with Tooting & Mitcham and AFC Wimbledon. Alongside her playing career, she has coached for around 28 years, working with players at every level, including Olympians.

Her work in education runs just as deep. For 20 years she has worked in schools, including leading Physical Education and Sport at the Swiss International Scientific School in Dubai, where she now serves as Assistant Head of Secondary.

Reflecting on the day, Alysha said:

“It was amazing to run a session for a group of girls so passionate about the game. The opportunities KGSA is providing for young women is truly wonderful and it was a privilege to be invited to be a part of it.”

Alysha’s support went beyond the coaching session. She also donated more than ten footballs to the academy for training and fixtures, a gift that will keep the girls playing long after her visit.

The head of KGSA expressed the academy’s gratitude:

“Thank you so much for visiting KGSA today and for the wonderful session with our girls. It was truly inspiring and motivating, and it will go a long way in improving their soccer skills. We also sincerely appreciate the donation of soccer balls, which will help our girls continue developing their talent and passion for the game. Thank you for your support and for investing in our girls’ soccer journey.”

Thank you, Alysha, for your time, your expertise and your generosity. We hope this is the first of many visits.
