DBA Africa Empowering Girls at the Western Rugby Academy

At DBA Africa, we believe that sport is more than just a game, it's a transformation tool. Today, we take a look at one of our most impactful satellite programs, the Western Girls Rugby Academy based at the Kabras grounds, ACK Showgrounds, Kakamega.

Here in Western Kenya, we are not just running a rugby program, we are building a robust platform for female empowerment.

A Safe Space for Growth and Positivity

Our mission has two sides, to cultivate talented athletes and to provide a crucial support structure for young women.

Every weekend, approximately 50 girls gather on the pitch for rigorous training sessions, year-round. This commitment keeps them busy and positive, offering a reliable, healthy routine that helps them focus on their future. Crucially, the program acts as a vital resource in the fight to avoid gender-based violence (GBV), helping these girls build resilience, confidence, and strong support networks.

We believe that every girl deserves the opportunity to pursue her sporting dreams in a safe and encouraging environment, thus providing them with girls rugby tournaments in Nairobi such as the futures cup.

Dedicated Coaching and Crucial Support

The success of the Academy is driven by the dedication of our coaches and the tangible support provided by DBA Africa:

  • Expert Coaching: Our technical side is led by Coach Hassan Ali, who brings world-class techniques to the team, refined by his participation in a DBA coaching program in collaboration with Kingsley School in Devon.
  • Holistic Mentorship: This year, we were thrilled to welcome Mercy Khatemje to the team. Mercy plays an essential role in addressing girl-specific issues that arise, ensuring our athletes receive not just coaching, but mentorship and support tailored to their unique needs.
  • Essential Nourishment: After every demanding session, DBA Africa ensures the girls receive nutritious meals, providing the energy and sustenance they need to recover and thrive. This is supported by Everybodies.

Changing the Game for Girls

The Western Girls Rugby Academy is actively working towards popularising sport in a region where athletic opportunities have historically been more readily available to boys. We are challenging old assumptions and making a clear statement, girls should also play. Especially in a region that is known for producing people with athletic characteristics.

We are incredibly proud of the resilience and dedication of these young athletes. They are proof that when you give a girl a chance, she doesn't just play the game, she changes it.
