From the Nairobi to the World Stage: Kenyan Talent Rises at KARDO

Kenya’s creative heartbeat was felt on the global stage this year as the KARDO Awards celebrated the best in street culture and sport. For the first time, Kenyan dancers and athletes stood shoulder to shoulder with the world, carrying with them not just their art but the pride of a nation that continues to prove its talent belongs anywhere.

Kenya at KARDO

Kenya was represented by a group of inspiring competitors who showed that our street culture is alive, disciplined, and ready for the world. Kenya had a face and a voice in George “Mzushi Africa” Kaminju, who travelled as the country’s ambassador. More than a dancer, he has become a storyteller for his community-turning the struggles and triumphs of Nairobi’s streets into art that speaks globally.

In total, Kenya had 16 participants in the online stage, with four making it to the final round.

Fabius Oduor would go on to win the Hip Hop Dance category at the online stage, earning his spot at the Grand Finals. He travelled alongside Mzushi, who represented the country as Kenya’s ambassador.Together, they formed more than a delegation, they were a statement that Kenyan youth culture is powerful, creative and global.

Mzushi Africa: From Tujiamini Silver to KARDO Ambassador

A year ago, George “Mzushi Africa” Kaminju was honoured with a Tujiamini Silver Award for Dance. That recognition was more than a trophy; it was proof that his art, born from Nairobi’s streets, could inspire far beyond them.
Now, he stands as a KARDO Ambassador, representing Kenya internationally and embodying the journey from grassroots recognition to global leadership. To many in his community, Mzushi is already a legend - not only for his moves but for showing that discipline, resilience, and faith in one’s gift can break barriers.

Reflecting on the experience, he said:

“The highlight of KARDO 8 was Kenya’s win in the Hip Hop category. It was Kenya’s first time on the platform and for Fabius to go ahead and clinch the first place was nothing short of impressive. As a Kenyan ambassador it meant everything to me to be able to speak for Kenya and highlight the work being done as well as the challenges facing the Hip Hop and Urban Sports sectors back home. It also gave me a unique opportunity to learn, network and exchange with other ambassadors representing 50+ countries around the world engaged in developing Hip Hop and Urban Sports.”

Fabius Oduor: Winning at KARDO in DBA Colours

Alongside him, Fabius Oduor (@iamduor) made Kenya proud with his performance and victory at KARDO. What stood out just as much as his skill was what he chose to wear: DBA Africa merch.

It wasn’t just clothing - it was a banner. A reminder that Kenyan talent, whether on the rugby pitch or the dance stage, carries with it community pride and a belief in what young Africans can achieve. Fabius’ win showed that when opportunity meets preparation, greatness follows.

On leadership, Mzushi added:

“My message would be for all to be consistent in their crafts as this is the most formidable tool in any artform. Keep upgrading your skills, be curious and most importantly invest in your craft as much as you can. I am also very interested in developing the infrastructure in these sectors as without the right infrastructure our local artists will have no chance competing with their counterparts from other parts of the world. We therefore must find ways to collaborate with other entities to ensure local talent not only has access to the right training equipment or knowledge but also that they can access relevant opportunities to improve their skills and status.”

Kenya’s story at KARDO is bigger than medals or titles. It shows every young person that the world stage is within reach, that a journey can begin on a street corner in Nairobi and end with recognition on an international platform. From Mzushi Africa’s rise from Tujiamini Silver to KARDO Ambassador to Fabius Oduor’s win in DBA colours, these moments prove that with opportunity, support, and belief, dreams become reality.

That same spirit now lives in the DBA Shop, where every piece of ‘merch’ carries more than design - it carries purpose. By wearing it, you stand with the movement,, invest in Kenyan talent, and help create more stories of grassroots beginnings growing into greatness.

This is not just clothing. It’s a statement of leadership, pride and solidarity. The world is watching Kenya and by backing the journey, you become part of the future we are building.
