Legacy in the Highlands: Kevin McCool’s Sister Meets the Champions of Iten.

On Tuesday, the 2nd of December, May McCool, sister to the late Kevin McCool, along with his great friend Matt, travelled down to this home of long-distance runners to meet the current beneficiaries of the Kevin McCool Fund, managed by DBA Africa.

This endeavour was DBA Africa's first Athletics drive, the journey was far more than a routine check-in, it was a chance to get to know and remember Kevin, an opportunity to hear first-hand about him, celebrate his memory, not just as a British soldier, but as a passionate, dedicated runner and wonderful human.  May shared pictures and memories, painting a vivid picture of a man who genuinely loved sport, a passion that ultimately inspired the start of the fund. Seeing this side of Kevin resonated deeply with the athletes.

Equally transformative was the experience for May. Stepping into Iten allowed her to see the rigorous, yet humble, environment that produces world-class athletes. She was able to see the basic roads and paths where these amazing long-distance runners train and the humbling environment in which they live.  Getting a glimpse into the athletes’ background and the essence of their dedication was an eye-opening and deeply moving experience. The simple yet focused way of life, a testament to discipline and unwavering commitment, was truly inspiring for May to witness.

The gathering itself was a huge success. Over 20 of the 34 athletes were available to meet May and Matt for a post-training brunch.  May’s commitment to sharing Kevin’s story was met with enthusiasm; she was bombarded with numerous questions which she loved responding to, basking in the genuine curiosity and warmth of the group. In memory of Kevin, she was presented with a birthday cake which was to celebrate what would have been his 34th birthday a few weeks prior.

Both May and Matt had a vibrant dialogue, asking compelling questions about the athletes’ aspirations, training challenges, and how the fund has directly impacted their careers. The athletes, in turn, responded with eloquence and gratitude, collectively commending KMMF and DBA Africa for the superb support and efficient management of the fund. Their shared appreciation underscored the success of the visit, proving that the logistical efforts, which May graciously acknowledged as a potential “nightmare”, were entirely worth it. The event successfully bridged continents and hearts, reinforcing that Kevin’s legacy, powered by the efforts of DBA Africa, continues to fuel the dreams of Africa’s champions.
