Rising High in the City of Champions
DBA Africa’s Eldoret City Marathon Report
The streets of Eldoret, the undisputed "City of Champions", hosted a thrilling event, a weekend of grit and endurance this past weekend. We were proud to facilitate race entry for over 10 elite prospects into the Eldoret City Marathon, a race known for its punishing elevation and for attracting the deepest talent pool in Kenyan and overseas distance running.
Representing the Athletics Race Fund (ARF) and the Kevin McCool Memorial Fund (KMMF), our athletes stepped onto the tarmac to test their off-season training against over 350 registered competitors.
A Fast Field in High Altitude
The Eldoret City Marathon is famously difficult. Between the thinning air of the high-altitude plateau and a course designed to test your body and its capabilities, every second is earned. This year, the event served as the primary battleground for the nation’s top domestic talent not currently competing on the international circuit as well as some internationals.
The men’s elite race was a masterclass in pacing, with the winner crossing the line in 2:12:53. Given the local terrain, this pace was exceptionally fast. Leading for the DBA Africa teams was Wilson Kiprop Tuitoek. Wilson delivered a standout performance, navigating through the hills to finish in 18th place overall with a commendable time of 2:18:00. Placing in the top 20 of such a competitive local field is a testament to his rising trajectory in the sport.
Resilience in the Women’s Category
The women’s race was defined by tactical brilliance and a nail-biting finish, with the top three athletes finishing within a minute of one another. The pole position was secured by Dorine Chesang in 2:30:26.
Representing the KMMF group, Purity Kalekye Mutui showcased incredible resilience. Purity crossed the finish line in 2:53:00, securing 31st position in a world-class field. Reflecting on the experience, Purity highlighted the technical demands of the Eldoret course:
“The track was filled with hills and very many bends. The windy road was very challenging. The weather was beautiful and not too tough to manage, the track was the tricky one. However, I am grateful to team DBA Africa for entering us all into this gracious event.”
She was the only lady who was keen to test her training during this event.
Looking Ahead
For both the ARF and KMMF squads, these results mark a successful first major outing of the year. The primary goal of DBA Africa remains the elevation of Kenyan talent to the global stage, providing the basic support necessary for athletes to focus solely on their performance.
We are confident that the scouts and managers lining the route took note of the determination shown by our runners. As we celebrate these results, our focus now shifts to the next event on the calendar. We remain committed to supporting the next generation of distance runners as they chase their dreams from the Highlands of Kenya to the world's most prestigious podiums.
