The Matildas in Kenya

A Celebration of Football and Cultural Exchange

The Australian Women’s National Football Team, affectionately known as the Matildas, has a storied history. Following an inspiring performance at the 1994 World Cup in Sweden, a nationwide campaign was launched to find a dedicated identity for the squad. Moving away from the "Socceroos" moniker, the name "Matildas" was officially adopted in 1995 and has since become synonymous with excellence in women’s sport.

This week, the Australian High Commission partnered with DBA Africa to help arrange a day of ‘Football outreach and inspirational’ during the Kenya leg of their international tour.

International Fixtures: Dominance on the Pitch

The tour kicked off with a high-stakes four-nation tournament featuring Kenya, Australia, Malawi, and India. The opening fixtures delivered exceptional highlights and a buzzing atmosphere for the fans in attendance.

  • Australia vs. Malawi: The Matildas lived up to their world-class reputation, securing a commanding 5-0 victory.
  • Kenya vs. India: The Harambee Starlets followed suit with a clinical 2-0 win, much to the delight of the local supporters.

Though the stadium was not at full capacity, the "electric" energy and vibrant local support provided a massive boost to the players, setting a high standard for the matches to follow.

Beyond the Game: CSR and Cultural Exchange

While the teams utilised their rest days to prepare for the highly anticipated Kenya vs. Australia clash on Wednesday, the focus shifted to community impact. In a proud collaboration with the Australian High Commission (AHC), DBA Africa facilitated a morning of education and cultural exchange .

With the logistical support from Adequate Safaris, we coordinated transfers for students from the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy, one of our partner schools, to join the Matildas at their training grounds.

The session provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the young athletes to:

  • Observe professional-level training drills firsthand.
  • Receive direct coaching from the Australian national squad.
  • Engage in meaningful dialogue about the pathways to professional football and culture.

Despite it being school holidays, the turnout was overwhelming, reflecting the immense passion for the game among Kenya's youth and the rare opportunity to witness some of the world’s greatest athletes on our home ground.

A Growing Partnership

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Australian High Commission for their trust in DBA Africa to execute this initiative. These collaborations reinforce our mission to provide local athletes with global perspectives and elite mentorship.

We look forward to a thrilling remainder of the tour, the final between Australia and Kenya, and many more successful cultural exchanges.

Dream. Believe. Achieve.
