From Bryanston to Nairobi
How Nick Williams Guided Rayvon Amunga (Forest) in his UK Journey
For any young athlete, moving thousands of miles across the globe to pursue a dream is as daunting as it is exciting. When Kenyan rugby prospect Rayvon “Forest” Amunga secured a prestigious two-year sports scholarship to Bryanston School in the UK, he was stepping into a world of incredible opportunity but also change. Fortunately, Bryanston went above and beyond to ensure Forest felt entirely at home, providing a safe and nurturing environment where he could balance rigorous academics with elite-level training, ultimately representing the school in high-stakes regional and national tournaments.
While Forest’s spectacular performances on and off the field have been well-documented, his remarkable milestones were not achieved alone. Walking alongside him through every success and challenge was Mr. Nick Williams, Bryanston’s rugby coach. As a former All Black with a storied professional career playing for top-tier clubs in New Zealand and the UK, Nick brought an unparalleled wealth of elite rugby experience to the pitch.
More importantly, he brought profound mentorship, providing Ray with the necessary life skills to navigate life in England. Moving to a new country can easily leave a young athlete feeling isolated, but under Nick’s guidance, Forest never felt lost or alone. Nick served as a vital sounding board, a cultural bridge, and a steady anchor throughout the scholarship period.
Reflecting on their time together, Nick shared: “Forest was very easy to work with. Coming from a similar background and possessing a genuine hunger for rugby, he was a true trailblazer within the school. He was enthusiastic and eagerly participated in numerous activities that helped him grow into an amazing, holistic young man.” This holistic youth development is a testament to Nick’s coaching philosophy, which prioritizes character building just as much as sporting excellence.
Now, this inspiring rugby journey is coming full circle. In the coming weeks, DBA Africa will proudly host Mr. Nick Williams during his highly anticipated visit to Kenya. The visit marks an exciting opportunity for Nick to reunite with his former athlete, Rayvon, on home soil and witness firsthand the vibrant ecosystem that nurtured Forest’s early talent.
The excitement surrounding Nick’s arrival has already gathered significant traction amongst the age grade rugby community. Eager to tap into his world-class expertise, numerous age-grade coaches from across the region have signed up to participate in an exclusive coaching clinic led by the former All Black. This highly anticipated masterclass will be hosted at Kenton College, serving as a premier platform for local coaches to refine their skills and adopt international best practices.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Nick Williams for the pivotal, life-changing role he played in Forest’s growth in the UK. We look forward to hosting him in Nairobi, and we are incredibly keen for our local rugby community to learn from his vast wealth of knowledge. Welcome to Kenya, Coach Nick.
